I just came across this brilliant story about the discovery of Uranus. In 1781 William Herschel discovered a new planet beyond Saturn.
It was the first time anyone had ever discovered a planet. All the other planets had been known since ancient times because they are clearly visible in the night sky to anyone who looks up at them.
That meant it was the first time anyone had ever gotten a chance to name a planet. So like any good scientist, Herschel decided to name the planet after his patron (the guy who paid for Herschel's telescope). Since Herschel was British, he named the planet after the King of England and so astronomy textbooks of the time listed the seven known planets as such:
1. Mercury 2. Venus 3. Earth 4. Mars 5. Jupiter 6. Saturn 7. George
"Planet George"... that has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? :-)
Sadly, the name didn't catch on with those snotty European intellectuals on the Continent, and so instead they named it after some stupid ancient Greek sky god, "Uranus". Bleh! How lame is that?
I think I'm going to start a petition drive to get the name changed back to George!!
Glad to hear that things there are great with you. It would be fun running your own business. So, you posted for teachers in the ads? Have you got some? Do they all Thai or foreigners? Just wondering.
